Both akoya and freshwater cultured pearls are beautiful high luster exquisite pearl options. Fine freshwater cultured
pearls are as exceptional in quality as their akoya counterpart. The differences of the two at this fine level is marketing and reputation. Akoya
pearls have developed a reputation over the last 100+ years as being the finest of pearl choices given Mikimoto's clever marketing. The Chinese however have
taken great strides to improve the quality of their freshwater cultured pearls over the last 20 years that these beautiful pearls rank on par with
the exceptional quality common to the akoya cultured pearls. Freshwater cultured pearls are cultivated in freshwater sources across China while the akoya
are farmed in salt water bodies of water around Japan. Freshwater pearls typically are all nacre whereas the akoya cultured pearls contain nacre only on the
top layers making freshwater in my opinion more authentic. Akoya cultured pearls are formed when a bead formed from a freshwater mollusk's shell is implanted into
an akoya oyster causing an irritation. Nacre is secreted around the implanted bead creating a beautiful high luster pearl with a beautiful round shape. Akoya pearls are
known for their extreme luster and almost perfectly round spherical shape. Fine freshwater pearls these days also exhibit these same beautiful qualities of extreme luster and
almost perfect roundness but with the pearl containing almost all nacre as opposed to nacre on only the top layers. So choosing between akoya and freshwater really boils down to price point as both are exceptional in quality.
